Small Point, Maine Burying Ground

        Wallace, Doughty & Sinclair
Every year, I vacation at the same place in Small Point, Maine. Technically a part of the town of Phippsburg, it sits on a beautiful tip of land between Casco Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. A couple of the cottages there date from around the mid-1800s, and the land has a great history.

On this privately-owned point is a small family cemetery, numbering less than twenty stones. It's surrounded by marsh, wood and trees, and is groomed each year by some of the regular vacationers. On my Summer 2002 vacation, I put together a small chart and transcription of the stones, as well as taking photos. Many of the stones are badly worn, and were difficult to make out, and though I was very careful to be as accurate as possible, I could very well have made mistakes or misread something.
Below is a map (not to scale) of the yard, with links to photos and transcriptions of each stone. If you're in the area and want to stop by yourself, be sure to ask permission of the landowners. They're around between Memorial and Labor Day, with the gates to the property locked during the rest of the year.
